Residents of Tumwater revere their city’s rich history, an area that was first inhabited by several Coastal Salish Indian groups. These tribes gathered shellfish from the Sound’s shores, caught salmon from the rivers and hunted small animals in the prairies. Tumwater, which is the Chinook word for “waterfall,” was first settled by European descendents in the mid-1800s and the village soon became permanently known for its beautiful landmark. Although agriculture, fishing and logging were major industries during community’s early days, Tumwater has developed in a diverse economy with major employers in numerous fields.
