Rochester is a peaceful community located in Thurston County approximately 20 miles south of Olympia. This former railroad junction has developed into a scenic retreat for people looking to leave the bustle of city living behind. Despite being named in honor of existing towns, Rochester, Washington stands alone in offering its 2,000 residents a neighborly, close-knit atmosphere.

The area surrounding Rochester includes several distinct communities that all contribute to the unique landscape of southern Thurston County. Grand Mound, which shares the same zip code as Rochester, is a community that developed around the largest of the Mima Mounds. These small hills measure 15-30 feet in diameter and up to eight feet tall. The Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve covers 445 acres north of the Rochester area and encompasses thousands of these “mounds.” During the Indian War in the mid-1800s, Fort Henness was built among the mounds to protect local families.

Residents living in Rochester can experience the wonder of these unusual land formations for themselves by visiting the preserve. A trail winds through the mounds to give visitors a closer look and possible explanations for their existence. Theories range from glaciers to gophers to Paul Bunyan. No matter the belief, the Mima Mounds are a spectacular sight to behold. Other attractions in the Rochester area include the Wolf Lodge Resort with its family-friendly activities including an indoor water park and diverse eateries. For those who want to try their hand at the slots, the Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel offers a full casino, upscale hotel, live entertainment and unique dining options.

Other former communities in the Rochester area include Jamestown, Independence and Fort Henness. Jamestown was settled in the 1850s by English immigrants who established a schoolhouse and post office. As a small settlement located south of Rochester, Independence also had its own post office in its heyday, but the area now is mostly farmland. Fort Henness provided local families protection from possible Indian uprisings. Even though these communities may not exist as they once did, residents can still feel their effect resonating through the countryside – complimenting the serenity of this rural haven.
